Background

Use of four structure types (Rubble Mounds, Culverts, Weirs, and Tide Gates) with the Coastal Modeling System was introduced in 2013. The implementation for Rubble Mounds was not integrated into the Surface-water Modeling System (SMS) interface until SMS 13.0. A few minor adjustments to this interface were made in version 13.3 of the SMS. There were delays in the implementation of the other three structure types, however, version 13.4 of the SMS will fully implement all four structure types.

Documentation

A technical note was started in 2024 for the newer implementation of Rubble Mounds. With the implementation of the other structures being imminent in SMS 13.4, the material Rubble Mounds will be incorporated into a larger Special Report in FY25 that covers all four structures. The original methods for implementing these structures in CMS are covered by the technical notes listed below.

Older SMS 11.2 Implementation
2013 ERDC/CHL Technical Note   Implementation of Structures in the CMS: Part I, Rubble Mound
2013 ERDC/CHL Technical Note   Implementation of Structures in the CMS: Part II, Weir
2013 ERDC/CHL Technical Note   Implementation of Structures in the CMS: Part III, Culvert
2013 ERDC/CHL Technical Note   Implementation of Structures in the CMS: Part IV, Tide Gate
Newer SMS Implementation
2025 ERDC/CHL Special Report   Implementation of Structures for CMS Applications in SMS 13.4+ (in progress)
